Potential gradient
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008083
The rate of change of an atmospheric potential field with respect to distance, indicating the direction and magnitude of the steepest increase in potential. In atmospheric electricity, it describes the vertical variation of electric potential, which drives charge separation and lightning. The fair-weather potential gradient near the Earth's surface is typically around 100-150 V/m.
