Temperature gradient
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003785
The rate at which temperature increases with depth in the Earth's crust, typically expressed in degrees Celsius per kilometer or Fahrenheit per 100 feet. This gradient is a key factor in the thermal maturation of organic matter into hydrocarbons. Typical geothermal gradients range from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius per kilometer in sedimentary basins.
