Catagenesis
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000587
The second stage of organic matter maturation, following diagenesis, in which burial heat of roughly 60 to 150 degrees Celsius cracks kerogen into oil and, near the top of that range, into wet gas. It corresponds to the oil window, usually at depths of about 2,000 to 5,000 metres. The next stage, metagenesis, at about 150 to 200 degrees Celsius, cracks the remaining oil into dry gas.
