Catagenesis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001698
A geological process involving the thermal alteration of organic matter in sedimentary rocks, primarily through increasing temperature and pressure, leading to the formation of hydrocarbons like oil and natural gas. This process occurs at depths and temperatures greater than diagenesis but less than metagenesis. It is a key stage in petroleum generation.
