Fossil fuel

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004612

A natural fuel, such as coal, oil, or natural gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. These fuels are rich in carbon and hydrogen and release energy when combusted, making them primary sources of energy for human activities. Their formation typically involves millions of years of heat and pressure acting on organic matter.
