Fuel element

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004692

The smallest structurally discrete part of a nuclear reactor core that has fuel as its principal constituent, such as a clad fuel rod, plate or pebble. Fissile material, commonly uranium dioxide or a uranium alloy, sits inside a protective cladding that retains fission products and passes heat to the coolant. Several elements are grouped into a fuel assembly, as with the 264 fuel rods of a Westinghouse 17 by 17 PWR assembly.
