Nuclear reactor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008116
A device that initiates and controls a sustained nuclear chain reaction, typically for generating electricity or producing radioisotopes. It contains nuclear fuel, a moderator to slow down neutrons, control rods to regulate the reaction, and a coolant to remove heat. The thermal power output of a typical commercial nuclear reactor can range from hundreds to thousands of megawatts.
