Nuclear fission

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008099

The process in which a heavy atomic nucleus splits into two or more smaller nuclei, along with a few neutrons and a large amount of energy. This process is typically initiated by bombarding the heavy nucleus with a neutron, causing it to become unstable. The energy released per fission event is on the order of 200 MeV.
