Thermal fission
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011943
The nuclear fission of heavy atomic nuclei, such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239, induced by the absorption of thermal neutrons. These low-energy neutrons are readily absorbed by fissile isotopes, leading to the splitting of the nucleus and the release of energy and additional neutrons. This process is the basis for nuclear power generation.
