Thermal neutrons
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011949
Neutrons that are in thermal equilibrium with their surrounding medium, typically having kinetic energies comparable to the thermal energy of atoms at room temperature. Their average energy is approximately 0.025 electron volts. These low-energy neutrons are highly effective at inducing fission in certain heavy isotopes, such as uranium-235.
