Cold neutrons
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002202
Neutrons possessing kinetic energies significantly lower than those of thermal neutrons, typically below 0.025 electronvolts. These low-energy neutrons are produced by moderating fast neutrons in very cold materials, such as liquid hydrogen or deuterium. Their long wavelengths make them suitable for studying large-scale structures in materials through scattering experiments.
