Moderation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007448
The process of reducing the kinetic energy of fast neutrons, typically through elastic and inelastic scattering collisions with atomic nuclei. This reduction in energy converts fast neutrons into thermal neutrons, which are more likely to induce fission in certain nuclear reactions. Materials used for this purpose are known as moderators.
