Fission neutrons

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004448

Neutrons released during the process of nuclear fission, which is the splitting of a heavy atomic nucleus. These neutrons are emitted with high kinetic energy and can induce further fission events in other fissile nuclei, sustaining a nuclear chain reaction. The average number of fission neutrons released per fission event for uranium-235 is approximately 2.5.
