Fission fragments
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013108
The atomic nuclei formed when a heavy nucleus undergoes nuclear fission, splitting into two or more smaller nuclei. These fragments are highly energetic and radioactive, carrying away a large portion of the energy released during the fission event. Their kinetic energy is typically in the range of 160 to 170 MeV.
