Delayed neutrons
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013024
Neutrons that are emitted by the radioactive decay of certain fission products, rather than being released instantaneously during the fission event itself. These neutrons are produced following the beta decay of a precursor nuclide, which results in an excited daughter nucleus that de-excites by neutron emission. The half-lives of the precursors range from fractions of a second to about a minute, which distinguishes them from prompt neutrons.
