Coalification

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002156

The geological process by which plant matter is transformed into coal over millions of years through the combined effects of heat, pressure, and microbial action. This diagenetic process involves the progressive removal of oxygen and hydrogen, leading to an increase in carbon content and a decrease in volatile matter. The degree of coalification determines the rank of coal, from peat to anthracite.
