Transformation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012216
The conversion of one chemical substance into a particular product, described without regard to the reagents or the mechanism involved. In molecular biology the word has a second sense, the genetic change a cell undergoes when it takes up foreign DNA from its surroundings and expresses it. Turning aniline into acetanilide is a chemical transformation, whereas introducing a plasmid into bacteria is a genetic one.
