Plasmid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009023

An extrachromosomal genetic element consisting of a circular deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule that replicates independently of the host's chromosomal DNA. Plasmids are found in bacteria and some eukaryotes, where they can be transferred between cells through horizontal gene transfer. They are widely used in molecular cloning as vectors for introducing foreign genes into host organisms.
