Plasmapheresis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009022
An extracorporeal procedure for separating blood plasma from the formed elements of blood, such as cells and platelets. Whole blood is withdrawn from a patient, centrifuged or filtered to separate the plasma, and the cellular components are then returned to the patient's circulation, usually with a plasma replacement fluid. This process is used therapeutically to remove pathogenic substances, like autoantibodies or toxins, that are circulating in the plasma.
