Isotonic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006227
Describing a solution that has the same osmotic pressure as another solution, typically a biological fluid like blood plasma or intracellular fluid. When cells are placed in an isotonic solution, there is no net movement of water across the cell membrane. Physiological saline (0.9% NaCl) is an example of an isotonic solution for human red blood cells.
