Water potential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012646

The measure of the relative chemical potential energy of water in a system compared to pure water at the same temperature and atmospheric pressure. It determines the direction of water movement, as water flows from an area of higher potential to an area of lower potential. This potential is the sum of pressure potential, solute potential, and gravity potential, and is expressed in units of pressure, such as megapascals (MPa).
