Solute

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013566

A substance that is dissolved in another substance, known as the solvent, to form a solution. The solute is the minor component of the solution by mole fraction, although in some cases, such as a 50% ethanol solution in water, the distinction can be arbitrary. In a solution of salt in water, the salt is the solute and the water is the solvent.
