Lysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006854

The process of breaking down a cell membrane or cell wall, leading to the disruption of the cell and release of its intracellular contents. This can be achieved through physical, chemical, or biological means. For example, osmotic lysis occurs when a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, causing water to rush in and burst the cell.
