Membrane attack complex
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007155
A structure formed on the surface of pathogen cells as part of the complement system, a component of the innate immune response. It consists of multiple complement proteins (C5b, C6, C7, C8, and multiple C9 units) that assemble to create a pore in the target cell's membrane. This pore disrupts the cell's osmotic balance, leading to cell lysis and death.
