Membrane bilayer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007156
A fundamental structural component of biological membranes, consisting of two layers of lipid molecules arranged tail-to-tail, with their hydrophilic heads facing the aqueous environments and their hydrophobic tails forming the interior. This bilayer acts as a selective barrier, regulating the passage of molecules into and out of cells. It is typically about 5 nanometers thick.
