Ceramide

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001809

A family of waxy lipid molecules composed of a sphingosine molecule linked to a fatty acid via an amide bond. Ceramides are fundamental structural components of the lipid bilayer in cell membranes and are precursors for all more complex sphingolipids, including sphingomyelin and glycosphingolipids. They also function as signaling molecules involved in regulating cellular differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis.
