Glycolipid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004939

  1. A compound in which a glycan is covalently linked to a lipid, as in glycosphingolipids, the typical glycolipids of higher organisms. These amphipathic molecules sit in the outer leaflet of cell membranes with their carbohydrate portions facing the extracellular space, where they take part in cell recognition and signalling. The ABO blood group determinants are carried on red cell glycolipids as well as on glycoproteins.

  2. Compounds containing one or more monosaccharide residues linked by a glycosidic bond to a lipid moiety, such as a fatty acid, glycerol, or sphingoid. These molecules are components of cell membranes, where the carbohydrate portion extends into the extracellular space. Glycolipids are classified based on their lipid component, with common classes including glyceroglycolipids and sphingoglycolipids, which includes cerebrosides and gangliosides.
