Lipopolysaccharides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006667
Complex macromolecules composed of a lipid component covalently linked to a polysaccharide chain. These molecules are a major component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, contributing significantly to their structural integrity and acting as endotoxins. The lipid portion, known as lipid A, is responsible for much of the molecule's toxicity.
