Saccharolipids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010469

A class of lipids in which fatty acids are linked directly to a sugar backbone, forming structures that are not based on glycerol. These compounds are widespread in nature, particularly in bacteria, where they are major components of cell membranes. An example is the lipid A component of lipopolysaccharides found in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, which consists of a glucosamine disaccharide acylated with multiple fatty acids.
