Glycerophospholipid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004935
A class of lipids that are major components of biological membranes, characterized by a glycerol backbone esterified to two fatty acids and a phosphate group. The phosphate group is further linked to a head group, such as choline, ethanolamine, or serine, which determines the specific type of glycerophospholipid. These molecules are amphipathic, possessing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions.
A major class of lipids that are fundamental components of biological membranes, characterized by a glycerol backbone esterified with two fatty acids and a phosphate group. The phosphate group is further esterified to a head group, such as choline or ethanolamine, which determines the specific type of glycerophospholipid. These molecules exhibit amphipathic properties, forming lipid bilayers.
