Amphipathic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000516
Describing a chemical entity possessing both a polar, water-attracting (hydrophilic) group and a nonpolar, water-repelling (hydrophobic) group on the same molecule. This dual nature causes the molecules to orient themselves at interfaces or to self-assemble in aqueous solutions. Common examples include surfactants and phospholipids, which form structures like micelles and lipid bilayers.
