Hydrophilic interaction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005483
An energetically favorable interaction between polar groups on a polymer chain and a surrounding aqueous solvent. This attraction arises from hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole forces involving functional groups like hydroxyls, carboxyls, or amines and water molecules. Unlike the entropy-driven hydrophobic effect, hydrophilic interactions are primarily enthalpic in nature, contributing to the dissolution of polar polymers in water and the orientation of amphiphilic structures.
