Dipole-dipole interaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003242

An electrostatic interaction between two permanent electric dipoles, either between molecules or between polar groups within one molecule, attractive or repulsive according to their relative orientation. For fixed dipoles its energy falls off with the inverse cube of the distance, and with the inverse sixth power once thermal rotation averages the orientations. Dispersion forces can exceed the dipole-dipole term even for polar molecules, particularly those with large polarizability.
