Atomic polar tensor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000902
A 3 by 3 tensor, one per atom, whose elements are the derivatives of the molecular dipole moment components with respect to Cartesian displacement of that atom. Each row corresponds to a dipole component and each column to a displacement along x, y or z. Atomic polar tensors are used in analysing infrared absorption intensities, and their SI unit is the coulomb.
