Dipolar coupling

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003238

A direct through-space magnetic interaction between two nuclear spins that arises from their magnetic moments and scales with the inverse cube of the internuclear distance, whatever bonds link the nuclei. It depends on the orientation of the internuclear vector to the field and averages to zero in isotropic liquids through rapid tumbling, but it broadens lines and gives distance information in solids. In solid-state NMR, magic-angle spinning averages it.
