Amphiphile

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000517

A chemical compound possessing two distinct regions within the same molecule: one that is solvophilic (solvent-attracting) and another that is solvophobic (solvent-repelling). This dual nature drives them to self-assemble in solution, forming organized structures like micelles or bilayers that minimize contact between the solvophobic parts and the solvent. Common examples of amphiphilic molecules include surfactants used in detergents and phospholipids that form cell membranes.
