Hydrophobic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005486

Describing a substance or a part of a molecule that lacks affinity for water and tends to repel it. These nonpolar regions or molecules prefer to associate with other nonpolar substances rather than with water. Hydrophobic interactions are a driving force in the self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers and proteins in aqueous environments.
