Cephalins

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001801

An older, now discouraged class name for glycerophospholipids whose phosphate is esterified with ethanolamine or serine, that is, the phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidylserines, first isolated from brain tissue. Each carries two fatty acid chains on the glycerol backbone. Current nomenclature names the compounds individually as phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidylserines instead.
