Sulfolipids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011560

A class of lipids containing a sulfur-linked functional group, such as a sulfonate group, or a lipid that is esterified with a sulfate. These compounds are amphiphilic, possessing both a hydrophobic lipid tail and a hydrophilic, sulfur-containing head group. One prominent example is sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerol, a sulfonate-containing glycolipid found in the photosynthetic membranes of plants and cyanobacteria.
