Sulfatides

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011546

A class of sulfated glycosphingolipids, which are lipids containing a carbohydrate group and a sulfate ester linkage. These compounds are found predominantly in the nervous system, particularly in the myelin sheath, where they contribute to its structural integrity and function. Their biosynthesis involves the transfer of a sulfate group from 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate.
