Myelin sheath
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007721
A protective and insulating layer that surrounds the axons of many nerve cells, facilitating the rapid transmission of electrical signals. It is formed by specialized glial cells, Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system. The sheath is interrupted at regular intervals by nodes of Ranvier.
