Myelin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007719
A fatty, insulating substance that forms a sheath around the axons of many neurons, particularly in the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is composed of lipids and proteins and is produced by glial cells. Myelin increases the speed and efficiency of electrical impulse transmission along nerve fibers.
