Demyelination
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002984
The process of damage to or loss of the myelin sheath, the fatty insulating layer that surrounds nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This damage impairs the efficient transmission of electrical signals along the nerve. Demyelination is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
