White matter
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012691
The tissue in the brain and spinal cord composed primarily of myelinated axons, which are nerve fibers covered in a fatty sheath. This myelin insulation allows for rapid transmission of electrical signals between different brain regions and to the rest of the body. It contrasts with gray matter, which consists mainly of neuronal cell bodies and unmyelinated axons.
