Wheal and flare
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012690
A characteristic biphasic skin reaction observed during immediate hypersensitivity responses, such as allergic reactions or intradermal histamine injection. The wheal is a central, raised, edematous area caused by local vasodilation and fluid leakage, while the flare is a surrounding area of redness (erythema) due to arteriolar dilation. This reaction is mediated by mast cell degranulation.
