Wheal
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012689
A transient, raised, and itchy area of skin caused by localized edema in the dermis. It results from the release of histamine and other mediators from mast cells, which increases the permeability of capillaries and allows plasma to leak into the surrounding tissue. The appearance of a wheal, often surrounded by a red flare, is a characteristic sign of urticaria (hives) and a positive result in allergy skin-prick tests.
