Angioedema

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000591

A rapid, localized swelling of the deep layers of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, mucosa, and submucosal tissues. It results from the swift extravasation of fluid into the interstitium due to an increase in vascular permeability. While often associated with allergic reactions and urticaria (hives), it also occurs in non-allergic forms, such as hereditary angioedema or as an adverse effect of medications like ACE inhibitors.
