Angioblast
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012870
A precursor cell derived from the mesenchyme that gives rise to the endothelial cells lining the interior surface of blood vessels. These progenitor cells aggregate to form primitive blood islands and vascular networks during embryonic development in a process called vasculogenesis. Angioblasts are characterized by the expression of specific cell surface markers, such as the receptor tyrosine kinase Flk-1 (VEGFR-2).
