Edema
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003573
An abnormal accumulation of excess fluid in the interstitial spaces of tissues or in body cavities, causing swelling. It results from an imbalance between the forces that regulate fluid distribution, such as increased hydrostatic pressure or decreased colloid osmotic pressure in blood vessels. Pitting edema is a specific type where a persistent indentation remains after pressure is applied to the swollen area.
