Swelling pressure

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011713

The pressure difference that must be applied between a swollen gel and the liquid it is in equilibrium with to prevent further swelling. It measures the gel's tendency to take up solvent, which is driven by the mixing of polymer and solvent and resisted by elastic stretching of the network, and it falls to zero once the gel reaches its equilibrium swelling. It is measured in pascals.
